From the field to the corporate office, how SM Energy manages and uses pipeline data

SM Energy operates in four core areas (Rocky Mountain, South Texas & Gulf Coast, Permian and Mid-Continent) out of its regional offices in Billings, Houston, Midland and Tulsa with its corporate headquarters in Denver, Colorado. Each regional office is staffed with a full complement of geologists, geophysicists, engineers and landmen with the executive team, accounting and information technology based in Denver. This makes for a unique challenge to support the daily operations from the Denver office while still meeting the requirements of the corporate office.

We use a complex enterprise geospatial information system to help capture pipeline data in the field for regulatory reporting purposes as well as deliver Hart/Rextag pipeline information to our gas marketing and business development teams. By using a fully integrated web mapping platform we are able to integrate all our various data sources in one location and support all of our operations accurately and timely. SM Energy’s custom web mapping application allows users to create or modify data, customize maps, generate high quality wall size maps (PDF and PNG) ready for printing, export up-to-date shapefiles or directly consume web mapping services in other mapping software. The enterprise GIS system allows our employee’s access to our companies most accurate, consistent and current geospatial data for their daily operations and decision making.
